Afternoon everybody! I hope you're all having a wonderful day! You should really be, it's the weekend after all- which is never a bad thing! Last Sunday, I headed through to Glasgow for the first of two consecutive days in the city for the 20th Commonwealth Games. I live just an hour away from the action but upon arriving in Glasgow I was completely taken aback by how the city looked. Glasgow has a reputation for being a little rough, very grey and extremely Scottish, which in many ways is accurate- but the Games have transformed the entire inner city into an almost Cosmopolitan haven. It definitely helped that the weather was pretty great too.
I had tickets for the finals of the rugby 7s on the Sunday and then on the Monday we headed back in for a trip to Hampden (the national football stadium) to see the Athletics. Seeing Libby Clegg, a Scottish para-runner, win her gold in the 100m's was far and away the highlight of what was an amazing weekend. I'm not going to bore you all with a step by step account of my time there, but here are some pictures to give you an idea!
Day One- Sunday 27th July
Headed into central Glasgow and took in the sites by the Clyde, opposite the Hydro- before heading to BBC at the Quay, a free event set up for visitors to the city to take in some events on a large screen- as well as gimmicky rides and food!
We travelled to Glasgow to see friends of my Dad, one of whom is a radio and TV presenter for the BBC, as well as a stand up comedian. He was able to give us a little tour of the BBC studios, which was REALLY cool.
Fancy offices *Beware of vertigo!* |
It was muggy as hell, but the view from the roof was still amazing! |
We then treked the short distance to Ibrox to watch the rugby!
The Gold Medal was eventually won by South Africa after an extremely exciting final versus the 'mighty' all-blacks. Things got tense. One speed walk back to the car and a fish supper later, I was 100% ready for bed.
Day Two- Monday 28th July
Slept in. Shocking. Enjoyed breakfast in a far sunnier Glasgow before heading into the inner city for lunch. Did someone say food-obsession?
Questionable street entertainment. |
A very fancy, panoramic view of George Square. |
More questionable entertainment whilst queuing to get in. |
More fancy panorama views. |
After a lot of quite horrific queuing and some very grumpy fellow queuers (that's not a word.) we made it in, as you can see- it was unbelievable.
I took a million photos, but these are some of the least rubbish ones! I hope you enjoyed the first of what I hope will be a long series of Smith on Tour posts! Here's to a lifetime of crazy days out! Favourites will be up tomorrow, I PROMISE!
