Film Friday: 'The Other Woman' Review

Hello folks, many of you will have heard about the latest chick-flick release 'The Other Woman.' The premise is that a woman, Carly (Cameron Diaz) discovers that the man she is dating is married after she accidentally meets his wife, Kate (Leslie Mann.) The pair become bizarre friends and plot to ruin the guys life, particularly after discovering a third woman, Amber (Kate Upton.) Essentially, the plot is 'John Tucker Must Die' grown up.

I'll admit I didn't have particularly high hopes for this film when I first went to see it, I expected a usual chick-flick comedy, however 'The Other Woman' was genuinely hilarious, I cannot actually fully describe just how many times I was left doubled over laughing with tears running down my face. This was particuarly the case during scenes both where Cameron Diaz hides under Leslie Mann's wedding dress in an attempt to conceal herself, and a scene where the cheating jerk, Mark (Nicolaj Coster-Waldau) is given laxatives. The comic highlight for myself was a scene where in pursuit of Mark, Cameron and Mann fall into a bush, where some physical jiggery pokery ensues, cue intense laughter.

Carly and Mark
There were at least a dozen moments of ridiculous humour, at times resembling Bridesmaids, or even American Pie, which was both totally unexpected and an unbelievable addition to what was already a popular plot idea. The downfall of Mark was both extremely satisfying to watch, but also quite heartwarming in terms of viewing how the girls bonded and became best friends. Cameron, Leslie and Kate are all gorgeous and Diaz especially looks incredibly put together at many points. Additional points go to the casting of Kate Upton's boobs. Seriously, watch the trailer.

See what I mean?
Nicki Minaj also co-stars and actually brings some serious additional humour to the plot, she was more of a Justin Timberlake in 'Friends with Benefits' than a Rihanna in 'Battleship' which was yet another plus point for singers transitioning into acting. Taylor Kinney also stars as Cameron Diaz's second love interest, and is extremely handsome in doing so, more bonus points

Overall, if you're looking for a hard hitting drama, or an intellectual way to spend two hours, this film is not it, but it doesn't pretend to be, and most importantly it is incredibly funny. Proper critics are likely to suck the fun out of the film, commenting on the fact that plot is slightly demeaning to woman, in the sense that these three women seem to have nothing to devote themselves to 'getting back' at a guy, but I don't pretend to be a proper critic, I'm a girl who saw a film which made her laugh a lot, and improved her day. And if that isn't what your looking for then feel free to avoid this film like the bubonic plague. Finally, it's worth noting that I was sitting behind a group which contained many men, all of whom found it at least as funny as I did. Men, take note.

Plot: 6/10
Characters: 10/10
Overall: 8/10
